Marketing lessons from U2

Written by Nicole Meloche

I was lucky enough to be able to see a U2 concert the other night. It was at first just a treat to go because seeing them is a bucket list item for many of us. Once I entered Spartan Stadium at Michigan State University on a beautiful Michigan summer Sunday evening, there was a sense of peace.

The crowd wasn’t wild or out of control, they were waiting. Being my first time seeing them, I was a little bit disappointed that maybe it was a bucket list item for too many of the viewers and no one was excited enough to make some noise at the anticipation of seeing U2. Once the concert started, I quickly realized why the crowd was calm.

This group that created its own path in music knew how to perform for its audience. From the first note they had the audience entranced. They played songs that bought back moments in life for me. I remember when my brother (U2 ultra fan), first, heard the cassette, yes, cassette.

He broke into my room “you have to come listen to this band, U2, they are amazing”.

I went to listen to them with him, for 45 minutes plus we sat there, saying nothing, just listening to the words, the beat and created our own feeling of what the band meant to us. As the years went on, I listen to U2 remembering those moments with my brother.

Simply stated, once you understand your current clients and what they need, you can easily acquire new clients.

U2 has done this for 30 years, acquiring millions of fans. Being passionate about understanding and meeting they wants or needs of your clients will create more word of mouth business than imagined. Take the time to understand your clients, let your clients become you fans.
